St. Aloysius Gonzaga St. Aloysius Gonzaga was born in to the world of royal courts and high ranking military officials. Though his father desired him to join the military, Aloysius showed from a very young age that he followed orders from a "higher" authority. At the age of 11, Aloysius spent his time teaching the Catholic faith to poor children in the villages, fasting and spend several hours deep in prayer. He wanted to serve God and longed to joining the Jesuit missionaries. After a four-year debate with his father, he was finally allowed to join the Jesuits. He prayed so powerfully that he was asked to take breaks and participate in recreation. He also fasted so much that he had to be forced to eat more. He eventually went to serve in a Jesuit hospital and contracted an illness that made him weak and unable to leave his bed. He never stopped praying and died of the age of 23. St Aloysius Gonzaga, pray for us!

St. Agnes St. Agnes, was known for her beauty and caught the attention of many men but her only love was Jesus. Around the age of 13, a Roman prefect that was so upset by her refusal of him turned her in for being Christian... a charge punishable by death at that time. Agnes was stripped naked and dragged through the streets to a brothel. Refusing to sin, Agnes prayed that God would preserve her from sin. As she prayed, her hair grew at a miraculous rate and covered her nakedness. (picture Rapunzel) every man that tried forcing himself on her was struck blind and the Roman prefect dropped dead. However Agnes prayed over his body and he miraculously came back to life. Convicted for her Christianity, Agnes was led out of her cell and bound to a stake to be burned alive. When the guard went to light the wood, however, it would not burn. When it finally caught fire, the flames parted way around her preserving her from harm. She was eventually beheaded. St. Agnes, pray for us!

Saint of the Week - St. Agatha of Sicily

Image
St. Agatha of Sicily St. Agatha of Sicily was a beautiful young girl that was born into a wealthy family in the third century. At the age of 15, Agatha decided that she would live a life consecrated to God and that she would remain a virgin. Unfortunately for her, this was a time of great Christian persecution and on top of that, a Roman prefect named Quintianus had a growing infatuation with her, even though Agatha wanted nothing to do with him. Quintianus sent her to live in a brothel but Agatha repeatedly refused any customers and she continued to profess her purity and love for God. Agatha was eventually imprisoned and suffered repeated tortures. She even endured the brutal act of having her breasts cut off. Agatha remained imprisoned but received no medical attention. It is said that St. Peter appeared in her cell and healed her wounds. Quintanius lost his mind and ordered her to be burned to death on a bed of hot coals but remained unscathed. An earthquake stuck while she w...

Saint of the Week... The Blessed Virgin Mary

Image
The Blessed Virgin Mary - The Greatest Saint Mary is not "just another saint"... she is the GREATEST Saint! Mary is everything that we are called to be as Catholics, she is the perfect disciple. Mary's saintliness is rooted in humility, trust, service and love. Sometimes people get confused as to why Catholics make such a big deal about Mary, or go to her at all when it comes to prayer. Mary is the mother of God. Mary is our guardian and mother who loves us and prays for us. To be clear, the Catholic Church does not suggest taking the attention or focus off of Jesus. We as Catholics, are encouraged, implored and commanded to look to Christ and focus on Him during prayer. Mary does not, and would not do anything to divert the glory away from Jesus. She reflects Jesus' light to the world as she gently guides us back to her Son. When we pray, we invite Mary to join her prayers to ours, praying with us to Christ.  Our Lady, queen of heaven and Earth, pray for us!

RCBYM in the HOUSE!...God's house that is! 8 teens, 2 Core Members and 1 Music Minister from Risen Christ joined several parishes from around the valley last night for an evening of Advent reflection, praising our Lord in Adoration and making new friends! Deacon met us outside with Jesus and it was a great witness to see the reverent silence that took over as this group of youth knelt on the sidewalk... in the cold... clearing a path for our Lord before processing into the church behind the Eucharist. It was beautiful! Thank you St. John's for hosting!!! It was so good for our souls!!! #RCBYM #EmmanuelNight #universalandalive
